India’s Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is to allow tax professionals and other authorised intermediaries to file taxpayers’ returns electronically on their behalf as the government looks to expand provision of electronic access to the tax system.
Announcing the decision last Thursday, CBDT official Mr B Swarup told reporters at a press briefing organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) that the new scheme will become operative within one month.
According to ICAI estimates, some 10,000 chartered accountants affiliated to the institute are expected to use the service within one year of its launch.
The scheme represents the second phase in the roll out of e-tax provision by the Indian government after seven banks were designated to handle individual returns electronically in the initial phase last year.
Whilst the numbers using the e-file service through the banks has fallen short of estimates with just 11,000 returns filed, ND Gputa, a former president of the ICAI, observed that chartered accountants are much better equipped to carry out the task of electronic tax filing.
