India Tax Commissioner Faces Downfall In Bribery Scandal

by Robert Lee, Tax-News.com, London

08 November 2001

India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Chief Commissioner Someshvar of the Central Excise in Delhi for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh. According to a report from the India Times, the CBI's intelligence wing received a tip-off about the scandal.

A spokesman for the CBI confirmed that a Noida-based industrialist, Ashok Chaturvedi, visited the office of the chief commissioner together with an employee for meeting. The CBI team barged into the office to discover the chief commissioner apparently accepting the Rs 10 lakh from the industrialist. It is believed that Someshvar demanded the industrialist provide the bribe as settlement for a pending investigation on sales tax.
