Independent UK Software Developer Secures IP Victory Against Large Corporation

by Robin Pilgrim, LawAndTax-News.com, London

10 April 2003

It emerged this week that independent UK software developer, Thomas Kelty has secured compensation from a larger developer which stole his intellectual property following a software demonstration.

According to reports, Mr Kelty - who specialises in the creation of technology for medical devices - was under contract to the larger company when he demonstrated a product which he had developed, hoping to secure more work. Instead, the firm illegally used and distributed his software under its own name.

Supported by the Federation Against Software Theft (FAST), the UK developer managed to secure £9,000 in compensation from the company, as well as a guarantee that the software would be protected against further misuse by the company in question.

Speaking to the Out-Law news service this week, FAST's legal counsel, Julian Heathcote Hobbins explained that:

'This is a classic case of a larger corporation attempting to steam-roller the smaller guy. Providing there is sufficient evidence, FAST will do everything to protect software developers, irrespective of their size.'
