Speaking in Hong Kong last week, the incoming President of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), Professor K. Asmal called for closer international cooperation in the fight against money laundering.
Professional Asmal, who will take over the role as head of the FATF from Jean-Louis Fort in July, observed that increasing globalisation has meant that money laundering in one country is not an isolated problem, and can quickly spread to another.
"Therefore we cannot tackle this problem on our own. We need to seek one another out and coordinate our actions so that our combined capacities strengthen our ability to deal with the problem."
He reportedly went on to explain that under his stewardship, the FATF will continue with its programme of mutual evaluations, will maintain its cooperation with other international bodies, and will increase its efforts to build relationships with institutions such as the United Nations, and with various non-governmental organisations.
