Chinese climate experts are calling for importers of Chinese manufactured goods to share the responsibility for the carbon emissions created during the production process.
The call was made by the Director of China’s Climate Change department, Gao Li, in light of a recent survey which indicates that up to 25% of China's carbon emissions are produced during the creation of manufactured goods. Li argues that these emissions are created due to the high demand for Chinese products from foreign countries - particularly in the West.
Li criticized US proposals to impose carbon tariffs on goods imported from countries that do not themselves attempt to control carbon emissions. Neither China nor the US ratified the Kyoto protocol.
