The US Internal Revenue Service revealed last week that it is to cut significant numbers of jobs in its information technology, helpdesk, desktop, and telecommunications departments.
Following the circulation of a memo announcing the job cuts last Wednesday, W. Todd Grams, the tax authority's chief information officer, told the Federal Computer Week news service that a part of the cost-cutting initiative which will involve shifting administrative workers into technical support roles would likely "free up maybe around 150 jobs", and reduce IRS expenses by around $10 million.
According to Federal Computer Week, the IRS intends to complete the streamlining of its End User Equipment and Services and Enterprise Operations Services departments by September 2005.
However, the move has been condemned by the Union which represents IRS employees, the National Treasury Employees Union, which has argued that union leaders did not have the opportunity to exhaust all of the alternatives.
