Some 7.9 million checks totalling $4.8 billion were mailed by the Internal Revenue Service last week in advanced child tax credit payments as the initial stage of the payout was concluded and over the three week period, the IRS sent out 24 million checks equalling around $14 billion.
The Revenue has also reported that the 'where's my refund' feature installed on the IRS website allowing taxpayers to track the progress of their payments has been very popular, with 9 million using the feature in less than a month.
However, as IRS Commissioner, Mark Everson explains, there is very little for the taxpayer to do other than sit and wait for the check to arrive. "The only thing a taxpayer needs to do is cash the check," said Mark W. Everson, IRS Commissioner. "If you qualify, we’ll send you a notice. There's no need to call, no need to apply, no need to fill out another form. The IRS will do all the work."
The IRS informs those who filed their return after the April 15 deadline that they will receive their tax credit checks once the return has been processed, and gives a timely reminder to those who have an automatic filing extension that the deadline of August 15 is drawing closer.
