The US Internal Revenue Service on Friday issued a warning over fraudulent e-mails which purport to be from the tax authority.
According to the IRS, the e-mails announce that the recipient is the subject of a tax investigation, and explain that in order to dispute the charge, the taxpayer must log on to a designated website and provide personal information such as their social security number, credit card number, and driver's license number.
However, the department explained that neither the IRS nor the Treasury sends e-mails to taxpayers with regard to issues relating to their accounts, and suggested that the information is likely to be used to facilitate identity theft.
