IP Enforcement Directive Vote Delayed

by Ulrika Lomas, for LawAndTax-News.com, Brussels

13 February 2004

It emerged this week that a European Parliament vote on the draft Directive on the Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights, due on Monday, has been postponed in order to allow a consensus to be reached.

The draft Directive was issued by the European Commission last year, and has drawn criticism from music industry groups who argue that it does not go far enough in protecting the rights of copyright holders, and civil liberties groups, who argue that it goes too far.

Opinion within the Council of Ministers is reportedly equally divided, and the Irish European Union presidency has called for the vote to be postponed in order to address these divisions.

Reports have suggested that a new Council vote has been tentatively scheduled for March 11.
