A delegation from the Isle of Man is currently in the UAE to participate in the Expat Show, the expatriate lifestyle exhibition, at the Emirates Towers Hotel from October 10-12, and also to discuss the possibility of becoming the UAE's preferred e-commerce partner in Europe.
Headed by Donald J Gelling, chief minister of the Isle of Man, the delegation has entered into talks with the Sultan bin Nasser Al Suwaidi, governor of the UAE Central Bank; Ahmed bin Byat, chief executive of Dubai Internet City (DIC); and Abdul Rahman Ghanem Al Mutaiwee, director-general of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI).
The Isle of Man prides itself on being one of the first jurisdictions worldwide to develop an all encompassing e-commerce strategy and its cyber law is due for enactment some time next year. Mr Gelling told reporters: 'The Isle of Man is a top-drawer international finance centre as recognised by a number of powerful global organisations including the OECD and G7.'
He added: 'Dubai and the UAE, along with the Government of the Isle of Man, are at the forefront of e-commerce developments, and I am eager to exchange ideas and experience with those, particularly Dubai, who recognise that e-technology is the future of business. I am particularly keen to ensure that the perception of the Isle of Man is well-known throughout the Middle East.'
