IFPI Disappointed By Russian Copyright Loophole

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industries has expressed disappointment at the decision by the Russian authorities to take no further action against music download website, ALLOFMP3.com.

Although the website claims that it is licensed by the Russian Multimedia and Internet Society to sell MP3 tracks, the IFPI argued that the site is "unlicensed to distribute our members' repertoire inside Russia and in all major markets".

The Federation further took issue with the fact that ALLOFMP3.com sells music downloads at bargain basement prices, offering 500MB of music (around 40 albums) for just US$5.

However, according to regional news reports, Russian prosecutors revealed last week that they can pursue the matter no further as the country's copyright laws only cover physical media (such as CDs or DVDs), and not MP3s or other digital media.

The IFPI reportedly told the Tass news agency that although it had not received official confirmation of the decision, it would oppose it in court, if the reports were correct.
