The Irish Congress of Trade Unions instigated walkouts on February 21 in order to force the government back to the negotiating table, achieve an agreeable revision of the planned pension levy and to stake a claim to greater involvement in future policy decisions.
The Irish capital played host to a 120,000-strong rally of civil servants on Thursday, mustered by ICTU, united in protest again the government’s recently announced pension levy in the largest strike in thirty years. Further independent strikes have been scheduled by other unions.
The various bodies are petitioning for a more agreeable revision for civil servants on lower pay grades.
In response to the call for negotiations, the government has stated that they are open to further talks but would not significantly alter the current plan.
