According to reports on the ICANN meeting held in Vancouver last week, preliminary agreement has been reached on the establishment of a '.asia' domain.

The board of the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers gave its preliminary approval for the creation of the new domain, meaning that the DotAsia Organisation, which is behind the bid, can now begin commercial and technical talks with ICANN.

Although the move has received support from some quarters, concern has been expressed that businesses in Asia will be obliged to spend more in order to protect their brands.
