ICAI To Present Varney Rebuttal To Westminster,
by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London
Monday, February 11, 2008
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland (ICAI) announced on Friday that it has been invited to present its analysis of the Varney report to the House of Commons’ Northern Ireland Affairs Committee at Westminster on February 27th.
The Committee is to debate the analysis offered by Sir David Varney in his rejection of the case for reducing the corporation tax rate in Northern Ireland to that imposed in the Republic of Ireland.
ICAI has been key player in this debate, and will be publishing a rebuttal document to the Varney report on the day of the Committee hearing.
Also on Friday, ICAI hosted a gathering of political and business figures in Northern Ireland to discuss the case for a special tax rate for Northern Ireland, as distinct from that in place in the rest of the UK.
Commenting on the development, ICAI Director of Taxation, Brian Keegan, announced that:
“ICAI is pleased to have the opportunity to give evidence before the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee in Westminster. With Sir David committed to producing a 2nd report on this issue it is clear that this issue remains very much alive."
"ICAI is an all Island organisation, and our members have first hand knowledge and experience of how a low Corporation Tax rate contributes to the economy.
"We want to bring this knowledge and experience to the debate on Northern Ireland tax policy, and correct the points overlooked in the Varney Review – the impact of tax rates on Foreign Direct Investment and how lower business taxes generate prosperity and better results for the Exchequer overall."
He concluded: "ICAI is strongly of the view increasing economic activity through a corporation tax rate cut in Northern Ireland will add to the dynamism of the emerging all island economy and benefit both parts of the island.”
