In an interview with the Irish Independent last week, director general of the Irish Business and Employers Confederation (IBEC), Turlough O'Sullivan condemned the loopholes in the Republic's tax system which allow its wealthiest residents to pay virtually no income tax.
Calling for a more equitable tax system, Mr O'Sullivan told the newspaper that:
"The human reaction, when you find there are some who are ultra wealthy and they can avoid paying tax...well most people would react against that negatively."
Although he dismissed suggestions that Irish relative poverty rates are second only to the United States in the developed world, the IBEC chief did warn that rising costs were causing the country to lose its competitive edge.
