Hungarian Tax Experts Fear Post-Accession Legislative Logjam

Hungarian tax experts have warned of the potential for a legislative logjam now that the country is a member of the European Union.

Speaking to the Budapest Business Journal, senior tax partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Gabriella Erdos suggested that the majority of the problems faced by local businesses are likely to come as a result of administrative delays in issuing texts, official translations, and forms for newly implemented EU-compatible tax laws.

"Local authorities must have underestimated the workload that the accession-related changes required, which resulted in serious delays in certain areas," she explained, continuing:

"The tax and excise authorities are trying to be as cooperative as they can, but it is hard to foresee how tolerant the EU will be about local problems and mistakes."

She went on to warn that: "In some cases the problems could translate into direct losses."
