The US House of Representatives' Committee on Ways and Means last week approved draft legislation to implement the United States-Oman Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by a vote of 23 – 11, with three Members voting "present."
This agreement would immediately make duty-free all US commercial and industrial goods and 87 percent of US agricultural products entering Oman.
"This FTA follows the strong example of the US-Bahrain FTA in terms of our trade relations with the Persian Gulf region," explained Bill Thomas (R-CA), Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. "It continues to build a foundation for the Middle East Free Trade Area initiative."
"Oman and the broader Middle East will be watching our actions on this agreement. Failure to show the same strong support given to the US-Bahrain FTA last year would send a jarring signal to the Middle East that we are retreating rather than engaging," he added.
