In the US House of Representatives this week, it emerged that a new anti-spam bill, tougher than the proposed legislation put forward last month by Representatives W.J. 'Billy' Tauzin (R-La) and F. James Sensenbrenner Jr (R-Wis), is in the pipeline.
According to reports, the new bill, put forward by Reps. Heather A. Wilson (R-N.M) and Gene Green (D-Tex) will contain tougher enforcement powers for federal and state authorities against spammers, tighter restrictions on internet marketers, and an anti-pornography provision.
Speaking to the Washington Post in an interview, Rep. Wilson explained that although most other legislation on the subject focuses on pornography and scam e-mails, her bill recognizes that all unwanted commercial e-mail is essentially spam.
'This is a business that is always looking for the next loophole,' she observed, adding: 'We take out a lot of the loopholes.'
The Tauzin-Sensenbrenner bill came under fire recently when it was revealed that it had been compiled with the assistance of lobby groups from the online marketing and retailing industry.
