Speaking at the launch of the Hong Kong Intellectual Property Department's Open Day on Tuesday, Secretary for Commerce, Industry & Technology, Joseph Wong revealed that legislative amendments are being discussed to improve the Copyright Ordinance.
Opening the event, which was extended to three days in order to allow greater numbers of interested parties to participate, and ends today, Mr Wong suggested that a robust copyright protection regime will enable the economy to benefit from innovation and creativity.
He further argued that in formulating proposals to strengthen Hong Kong's intellectual property regime, the Government has struck the right balance between protecting copyright owners' rights and the legitimate use of copyrighted works by the public.
Three areas in which the Hong Kong authorities are taking action, according to Mr Wong, are in strengthening the legal framework for copyright protection, putting in place vigorous enforcement regimes to counter piracy and counterfeiting activities, and increasing awareness of and respect for copyright in the community.
