Leading independent global telecommunication carriers Flag Telecom, based in Bermuda, has announced plans for a new six-fibre system submarine cable link to be laid in Asia in collaboration with global broadband infrastructure company Level 3 Communications.

The new system is designed to provide intra-regional, city-to-city connectivity to ease the flow of high traffic between Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo and Taipei. Flag Telecom has agreed to extend Level 3's system to Korea, Hong Kong and Japan. The first link of the system between the two latter centres is expected to be in operation in the second quarter of this year. The cable system is already established in Hong Kong and is ahead of schedule with plans for the link to be up and running in Korea and Taiwan later this year.

The intra-Asia submarine cable system is constructed with state-of-the-art technology providing Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology operating at 10 Gbps. It is also expected to offer an initial combined capacity of 320 Gbps, upgradeable to 2.5-3.8 Tbps.

In total the system will be in excess of 10,000 kilometres in length and will be monitored and operated by Flag Telecom which will also be responsible for the integration of the Eastern and Western links. The cost of the entire operation is expected to be around US$900 million.

In a website press release Ed McCormack, chief executive officer of Flag Telecom, states: 'This agreement with Level 3 marks another major step in our strategy to develop a low-cost, scaleable global IP network to support our expanding Network Services business. The development of a North Asian loop has been an important part of our network expansion plan and we now expect to have terabit connectivity between major Asian cities in a substantially shortened time period and, we believe, significantly ahead of our competition.'
