Hong Kong Securities And Futures Commission Issues New Publications For Retail Investors

Hong Kong's Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) last week released two new booklets, in both English and Chinese, for retail investors. Entitled The A-Z of Stock Investing and Getting Started in Funds and MPF (Mandatory Provident Fund), the publications form part of the SFC's ongoing investor education programme that aims to better equip investors to understand the risks of investing and the need to ascertain key facts about proposed investments and the financial markets in general.

The A-Z of Stock Investing explains the key facts investors should be aware of when buying shares on the stock market. The SFC says investors must understand that risks extend beyond the fluctuation of share prices, and that they need to know the correct procedure for carrying out stock transactions and must ensure that any brokerages and account executives they deal with have proper licences. The booklet is a compilation of 15 excerpts from a full 26-part series of articles originally published in two local newspapers. The full series is available in the "Special Topics" section at the Electronic Investor Resources Centre (http://www.hkeirc.org), which is operated by the SFC.

The second booklet, Getting Started in Funds and MPF, is a joint effort between the SFC and the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority. Comprising two parts, the brochure clarifies the facts and fallacies of funds and fund management, and explains the parameters and procedures for MPF investments.

The SFC said in a statement: 'While the publications give useful general guidance on specific issues, it is not a substitute for seeking professional advice and investors should seek such advice, where appropriate, before making their investment decisions.'

The publications, which can be accessed in the Investor Education section of the SFC website at http://www.hksfc.org.hk, follow on from another recent SFC iniative launched earlier this month. A new publicity campaign was set in train recently, which includes TV and radio Announcements in the Public Interest (APIs) and a bilingual poster. The slogan of the campaign is "Get the Facts Before You Invest".
