Hong Kong remains one of the least corrupt economies in Asia, according to a study of twelve nations in the region published earlier this week.
The survey, conducted by Political & Economic Risk Consultancy Ltd. canvassed the views of more than 900 expatriate workers in Asia during January and February, asking the respondents how corruption influenced their business environment.
According to the results, Hong Kong was considered to be the third least corrupt economy behind Singapore and Japan, while Indonesia was considered the most corrupt, followed by the Philippines.
The report observed that the perception of corruption in Hong Kong has held steady for the last five years, noting that the territory has a “good reputation” on combating financial crime.
However, the report also observed that corruption remains something of a problem in China, and warned that more needs to be done to address the growing incidence of cross-border corruption between Hong Kong and the mainland.
