According to reports in the regional media this week, the Hong Kong authorities are planning to enact an anti-spam law in 2006, designed to cover unsolicited e-mails, faxes and certain types of cold-calling.
The government has been in consultation with the SAR's business community in order to draft legislation combating unsolicited faxes and text messages, spam, and telemarketing calls made using automated services.
Speaking on Monday with regard to the proposed law, director-general of the Hong Kong Telecommunications Authority, Au Man-ho revealed that the legislation would not apply to unsolicited cold calls made manually, as this could interfere with ordinary business activities.
However, he revealed that the government was in talks with the telemarketing sector on developing a code of conduct in this area.
