The Hong Kong Legislative Council approved an increase in air-passenger departure tax on Wednesday that government ministers hope will contribute towards reducing the city's budget deficit, which is projected to reach HK$70 billion this year.
This means that from January 9 next year, the levy will rise from HK$80 ($10.30) per ticket to $HK120 ($15.40), which Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Frederick Ma told the Council will raise an additional HK$400 million ($51.3 million) a year in revenue for the city's coffers.
Ma sought to justify the measure, a 2003/2004 budget proposal, by explaining that the rise was a relatively insignificant amount when compared against the cost of an airline ticket, and would not adversely impact on business, jobs, or the recovering tourism sector.
