A total of HK$500 million (US$64 million) in aid to industries hit by the SARS virus earlier this year has been approved by the government, officials told the media on Wednesday.

Speaking before the Hong Kong Legislative Council, Secretary for Economic Development and Labour Stephen Ip revealed that a total of 1,802 applications for SARS relief have been received from firms to date under the HK$3.5 billion government Loan Guarantee Scheme for SARS impacted industries. Of these, 1,559 applications have been approved for businesses employing a combined total of 18,236 staff, Mr Ip told the Council.

The minister claimed that the scheme has achieved its primary objective in giving firms vital financial support through the difficult economic period caused by the SARS outbreak earlier this year.
