Hong Kong's Secretary for Commerce, Industry & Technology, Joseph Wong stated on Tuesday that good progress has been made in fostering technology co-operation between Hong Kong and Guangdong.
The two governments have supported 193 projects with total funding of about $660 million under the Hong Kong/Guangdong Technology Co-operation Funding Scheme in the last two years, he announced, following the conclusion of his visit to Guangdong.
Under the scheme, launched in September 2004, the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology and the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Commission provide funding support to universities, research institutions and private enterprises to conduct applied R&D in six technology areas.
The six key areas which benefit from the scheme are radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies; automotive parts and accessory systems; electronic and information technology; new materials and fine chemical processing; critical precision manufacturing equipment; and new energy and energy-saving related technologies.
The funding scheme will continue throughout this year, and the Innovation & Technology Commission and the Guangdong Provincial Government's Department of Science & Technology are discussing the details.
During his visit, Mr Wong met with Guangdong Executive Vice Governor Tang Bingquan and Guangzhou Vice Mayor Chen Mingde.
He also toured the 99th Chinese Export Commodities Fair at the Guangzhou International Conference & Exhibition Centre, and visited two Hong Kong enterprises in the Guangzhou Economic & Technological Development District.
