Hedge Funds Brace For More SEC Scrutiny

Speculation within the US hedge fund industry as to possible speakers at the SEC's hedge fund hearings, taking place next Wednesday and Thursday, was ended this week.

The Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday released its list of speakers, which included representatives from industry star Soros Fund Management, and from new kid on the block, Andor Capital, as well as various other influential investment and legal professionals.

Calls for tighter regulation of the hedge fund industry from experts such as former SEC chairman Arthur Levitt, who earlier this week suggested measures such as registration and more frequent audits, in addition to making funds disclose their holdings, have put hedge fund managers on edge.

Speaking to Reuters on Wednesday, one unnamed manager revealed that if the changes, when they come, are too onerous, he may be forced to relocate offshore and turn away US investors:

'I'm moving my fund from Connecticut to California - I could just as well move to the Cayman Islands, if regulations sound really obnoxious,' he explained.
