In a bid to boost its fiscal reserves, the Taiwanese government has doubled the health and welfare surcharge levied on tobacco products.
Taking effect on June 1, the surcharge levied on packets of cigarettes has risen from TWD10 (USD0.30) to TWD20 (USD0.60); a measure which has increased cigarette prices to between TWD55 (USD1.69) and TWD70 (USD2.37) per packet, depending on the brand.
The Department of Health has estimated that the imposition of the health surcharge hike could generate an extra TWD10bn (USD308m) per year - the majority of which will be used to subsidize the country's National Health Insurance programs.
Permission has been granted by the Bureau of Health Promotion for the country's existing cigarette stocks to be sold to customers minus the new charge.
