Harris Back At The Helm In Third Spell As Nauru's President

by Mary Swire, Tax-News.com, Hong Kong

The Republic of Nauru remains in a state of political turmoil after former President Rene Harris replaced Ludwig Scotty at the helm of the country to become the fourth president this year.

It will be Harris's third term as president since 1999, his second term ending in January this year following a no-confidence vote. His predecessor Scotty had spent less than four months in the office and himself was deposed after a vote of no confidence.

It is not exactly clear why Scotty was ousted, though according to a recent statement issued by Steven Ray, Nauru's Consul General Designate in Washington, the former president was removed "in the wake of recent news surrounding the actions of President Ludwig Scotty…"

Following a meeting with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) in June, President Scotty had announced that he intended to revoke all 140 of the offshore banking licences held on the island, although the national bank was exempted from this.
