Speaking at the beginning of an US-Ireland business summit in Washington last week, Taniaste Mary Harney announced that the Irish government will be urging US multinationals to establish research and development (R&D) units within their existing facilities in Ireland.
The Irish Independent reported on Friday that Ms Harney argued that international firms with R&D units as part of their subsidiaries are 'less likely to move', although she also suggested that 'uncompetitive' wages could also be contributing to the waning level of interest expressed by multinationals.
The Tanaiste went on to warn that the Republic of Ireland could become substantially less attractive to overseas investors and companies, and could face a backlash from Eastern European rivals hoping to join the European Union in 2004, if the Nice Treaty is rejected again by the Irish people.
'If Ireland shows a detached attitude it would be negative - the US uses friendly EU nations to deliver results and sway policy,' she explained.
