Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has apologised on Thursday after its self assessment website became temporarily unavailable - preventing hundreds of taxpayers from registering their tax returns.
The website crashed early on Thursday morning - just hours before the deadline to file tax returns ran out.
The HMRC website stated at the time that:
"The self assessment online system is temporarily unavailable."
"We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and are working to restore the service as soon as possible."
The exact cause of the problem has not yet been identified, although HMRC has reportedly denied that a high volume of users caused the system to crash.
In response to concerns by worried taxpayers that they would be hit by a fine for late filing of GBP100 plus 5% interest charges on tax owed, HMRC announced that the deadline would be extended to midnight on Friday.
Speaking to the Times newspaper with regard to the snafu, George Bull, Baker Tilly Head of Tax argued that:
"It’s completely unacceptable that a State-operated system catering for the entire population can’t cope with an estimated 150-200,000 filings in one day, whereas large corporate IT systems regularly cope with volumes vastly in excess of this."
