According to reports in the UK media last week, HMRC has increased its VAT collections by £500 million following a crack-down on businesses suspected of understating their tax liability.
The additional VAT payments were the result of swoops on 85,000 firms, the Telegraph revealed on Thursday.
The UK tax authority has been facing criticism recently over the size of the VAT "black hole", with the Public Accounts Committee stating recently that between £2.5 billion and £4 billion is being underpaid.
The PAC also accused HMRC of having no idea of the breakdown between "genuine errors and more serious abuse calling for punitive action."
