Guernsey’s EU advisor last week urged the Channel Island to address its future relationship with the United Kingdom and European Union. Mr Alastair Burton, a Brussels lawyer retained by Guernsey to advise on European issues, was speaking at the annual general meeting of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. He said that Guernsey is faced with questions about its relationships with the EU, UK and OECD and other international organizations. While acknowledging that Protocol 3 of the Treaty of Accession was a good thing for Guernsey, he also went on to say that things have moved on since 1972 and the current continuous political change in the EU presented opportunities, challenges and sometimes threats for Guernsey.
