Guernsey's Social Security Department announced this week that it is introducing a new means tested benefit to help low income households with the new Tax on Real Property (TRP), which is replacing Tax on Rateable Values (TRV) from this year.
"The TRP Relief Scheme is designed to help people on low incomes whose TRP bills may have increased substantially as a result of the changes being made to the way property is taxed", explained Deputy Diane Lewis, Social Security Minister.
"Households with an annual TRP bill of GBP100 or more and a household income of less than GBP35,000 per annum should get in contact with us if their TRP bill is going to cause them a problem. Whether or not we can help will depend on individual circumstances," she added.
TRP bills for 2008 are being sent to all property owners this week. People wishing to apply for assistance under the TRP Relief Scheme should contact Social Security before mid-June, the Department stated.
