Guernsey To Develop Legal Resources Website

As part of its E-government initiative, Guernsey has announced that it is to develop a new legal resources website. Although a Crown dependency, Guernsey has its own laws and customs and the government is keen to ensure the provision of accurate information both on a local and international level. Hence the announcement this week from the island's Advisory and Finance Committee that a website will be set up to serve the needs of the local legal profession, the Guernsey government, local residents and interested parties outside the island.

A statement from Guernsey's Advisory and Finance Committee said: 'This development is part of the e-government initiative and is being supported by Advisory and Finance’s e-government team. Ultimately the legal resources site will contain a wide variety of material but, initially, the main content will comprise legislation currently in force together with an electronic system for case law reporting. The site will offer powerful search facilities and will need to be robust and easy to use. The website will make a consolidated view of the law readily available to all residents of the Bailiwick.'

The website is in the very early stages of planning. Guernsey's Law Officers are inviting tenders (to be submitted electronically) from parties interested in developing, implementing and supporting the website. The consensus is that Guernsey’s law is of broad interest and it is hoped that the website will be useful to law enforcement agencies and individuals as it will give immediate access to information. The government has said that it will use the experience gained from setting up the legal website to promote the use of electronic tendering in the future.
