It emerged this week that Peter Niven has been appointed by the Guernsey Department of Commerce and Employment as the jurisdiction's new Director of Finance Sector Development.
Mr Niven, who moved to Guernsey in 1996, was previously chief executive of the Lloyds TSB offshore financial services group.
His role, from next month, will be to coordinate and balance the interests of the different elements of the finance sector in order to formulate and deliver policies, strategies and legislation to secure and enhance its success within Guernsey's economy.
He will also assume the role of secretary of the Financial Industry Policy Advisory Group (FIPAG), previously a part-time position, and will be responsible for liaising closely with the Guernsey Financial Services Commission on matters of strategic importance.
Speaking on Tuesday with regard to the appointment, Deputy Stuart Falla, Minister for Commerce and Employment, suggested that:
"The appointment of someone as senior as Peter Niven to help the Department focus on the finance industry is a critical step in the States partnering with business to ensure that promotional and development opportunities are maximised."
He added:
"We are delighted to appoint somebody of the calibre of Peter who has a high level knowledge and understanding of many elements of financial services business."
