In a bid to lure more local on-line customers, Guernsey.Net has signed up Freeserve as a new Internet Service Provider (ISP), and the alliance will take effect within the next month, according to the Guernsey Press on-line news service. The move has been made possible by a successful appeal earlier this year to regulators over the pricing structure imposed on Guernsey.Net by Guernsey Telecoms (GT Online). In a Guernsey Press article on Thursday, Guernsey.Net's Managing Director said: 'GT and ourselves have reached an agreement on prices, with the help of the regulators and the Board of Industry, whom we found to be very helpful ...theres been a nice change of attitude over the last three months.'
Freeserve will provide Guernsey.Nets clients with the same rates as GT Online, as well as ISDN provision; there will be no subscription costs, and the basic rate is 1p a minute. Compared to this, UK Freeserve model ISPs are more costly at 3p a minute on peak, and 1p a minute off peak. Clearly, Guernsey.Net and Freeserve have struck a deal that will be beneficial to clients, and as Mr Hickton explains: 'It's basically to stop the numbers going off island. Were trying to welcome more people into the Guernsey.Net family.'
The Guernsey Press article reports that, in spite of a recent security issue with GT Online, Mr Hickton is certain that the new service will be secure: 'Weve been looking at this for over a year, ensuring that we have the right system that is secure and stable. This is the only one we have found that is robust enough', he said.
He also dismisses any fears that it would directly compete with Guernsey Telecoms; Im sure people will be interested. But the service we are offering will be a different one. While they [GT Online] offer a lot of local content on their site, our model will be basically just to surf and pick up mail,' with the addition of a games server for the local network.
Approximately 6000 clients currently subscribe to Guernsey.Net, and they can benefit from the new rates agreed with Guernsey Telecom. However the subscription service is in no way linked to the new ISP because it is located within a "walled garden" that protects its users from internet breaches of security. Mr Hickton assures his subscribers that the new service is 'a totally separate system with no links to our existing service to make sure that Guernsey.Net stays the most secure choice for businesses and the more security conscious individual.'
