Grenadian PM Rejects Proposal For Coalition Government

by Amanda Banks, Tax-News.com, London

28 September 2004

Grenada’s Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell has rejected a proposal by the leader of the main opposition party that a cross-party coalition be formed whilst the country recovers from the economic effects of Hurricane Ivan, according to a local media report.

National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader Tillman Thomas believes that the reconstruction of the country cannot be effectively managed by any one party, and has therefore called for a government of national unity in order to better cope with the crisis, Caribbean Net News states.

Mr Thomas has proposed that the elected members of the NDC be assimilated into the government, with Thomas himself assuming the post of Deputy Prime Minster.

Grenada was hit particularly hard by the powerful hurricane Ivan, which claimed 38 lives in the country and caused billions of dollars worth of damage.

Caribbean leaders recently agreed to a substantial aid package to assist Grenada’s recovery at an emergency meeting of Caricom Heads of State.
