Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell of Grenada has hinted that Grenada’s next general election will be held before it is constitutionally due in 2004, reports the Grenadian Voice newspaper. Addressing the New National Party’s General Council on Sunday, he told his supporters, many of whom he called “old soldiers”, that they should “oil the machine and get ready”. “Next year is the penultimate year. I was once the captain of a cricket team and I never wait until the last minute to win the game,” said the Prime Minister.
Dr Mitchell said that as from January 2002 “foot soldiers” will be mobilising. At least two Parliamentary Representatives will not be contesting the next election. At a recent Face to Face at the Calliste Government School, Dr Mitchell confirmed that MP for the area Hon Mark Isaac will not be running. On Sunday, the message also clear that MP for St Andrew North-East would also be out of the race.
The theme of the General Council meeting, which was attended by 257 delegates, was “Empowering our People for the 21st Century” — the same as last April’s NNP Convention. The delegates heard reports from Minister for Finance Anthony Boatswain; Minister for Works Gregory Bowen; Minister for Agriculture Claris Charles; Minister for Labour Lawrence Joseph and Minister for Youth and Sports Adrian Mitchell. In recent weeks, Prime Minister Mitchell has been undertaking “face to face” field trips and consultations in various constituencies while opposition parties have also been mounting meetings around the country.
