It emerged this week that Grenada-based Blue-Stream Communications is planning to move part of its operations to Barbados in order to take advantage of ongoing reforms taking place in the jurisdiction's telecommunications sector.
Speaking to the Barbados Business Authority, Blue-Stream director, Richard Carruthers explained that: 'We are considering moving a substantial part of our operational base and senior management to Barbados in the near future.'
However, he also revealed that unlike several other companies which are waiting to offer competition to former monopoly provider Cable & Wireless in the cellular market, Blue-Stream communications is positioning itself to offer wholesale, long distance, broadband internet access to corporate clients.
'In the first phase our focus will be on multinational companies that want to build private networks across several islands...we can offer them real costs savings,' the Barbados Daily Nation quoted Mr Carruthers as announcing.
According to the Daily Nation, Blue-Stream Communications is a partner in the new fibre optic network being built by the Luxembourg-based Island Fibre consortium. The company reportedly believes that unless a second fibre optic cable connecting some 14 islands in the Caribbean is put in place, Cable & Wireless 'will maintain its stranglehold on the islands'.
