Green Taxes And Simplification To Be Key CIOT Themes

by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

14 May 2008

Green taxes and simplification are the themes of the new President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT), Nick Goulding.

Mr Goulding announced them at the CIOT’s Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 13th May.

Simplification is one of the CIOT’s objectives and the focus of much of its work. The issue of green taxes is a new and growing area for the Institute.

Mr Goulding explained that:

“The CIOT will be looking at how green taxes work, what impact they have and how the CIOT can contribute to the environmental debate. It is sometimes said that we should tax what we ‘burn and not what we earn’. I want the CIOT to examine how this would work in practice.”

The CIOT is holding a roundtable discussion to look at green taxes during Tax Advice Week in early June.

The CIOT also has an Environmental Taxes Working Group that has responsibility for the Institute’s responses to consultation in this area.

Mr Goulding concluded by announcing that:

“I would also like to pay tribute to the excellent work of my predecessor, Rob Ellerby.”
