Government And Business To Discuss E-Commerce At Major Bermudian Conference

Bermudian Telecommunications and E-Commerce Minster Renee Webb will next week launch an e-business conference between government and business.

Speaking about the Information Age Forum, scheduled to commence on May 5, the minister explained: “The idea of the Forum is to ensure that we get together as a group on a regular basis so that we understand the developments and challenges that we each face, and so that we can pool our resources and work together to enhance our e-business offering on the island.”

Last year, the government released a green paper on the development of e-business in the jurisdiction which aimed to set out a more “aggressive stance on attracting sophisticated e-businesses,” in a bid to mark out Bermuda from its competitors.

The green paper also set out a “radical e-government” vision, and Bermuda claims to be the first country in the world to include e-commerce in the portfolio of a cabinet minister. The government also boasts that Bermuda was one of the first countries to pass E-Commerce legislation, giving legal substance to electronic data and transactions negotiated over the Internet.
