It has emerged this week that Google has filed an application with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) seeking to patent the distribution of advertising content via RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds.
According to reports in the US media, the patent was filed for by Google employee Nelson Minar in December 2003, but only became known to the public this week.
The application, entitled "Embedding advertisements in syndicated content" would, if granted, give the search portal exclusive rights over "incorporating targeted ads into information in a syndicated, e.g., RSS presentation format in an automated manner".
Such a development would likely cause problems for rival firms such as Moreover and Yahoo, which are currently developing their own systems for distributing ads via RSS news feeds.
