According to reports this week, internet search portal, Google has filed national and international patent applications in order to protect a system that it has developed which ranks news stories in terms of the reliability of their source as well as their relevance to the search terms entered.
In its USPTO filing, Google observed that:
"There exists a need for systems and methods for improving the ranking of news articles based on the quality of the news source with which the articles are associated."
It went on to reveal that under pre-ranking system that it has sought to patent, stories from news sources such as the BBC or CNN, which are "widely regarded as high quality sources of accuracy of reporting, (and) professionalism in writing" would top search results.
