It emerged last week that Google is facing yet another patent battle, this time over technology utilised by its Google Talk internet telephony service.
Rates Technology Inc has filed a suit against the internet search portal, claiming that two of its patents, relating to the minimization of costs, have been infringed. RTI is seeking damages, court costs, and an injunction to prevent the technology in question from being used without its permission.
It has been suggested that Google's recent purchase of a 5% stake in AOL could allow it to sidestep the charges by licensing AOL's own VoIP TotalTalk VoIP product.
Google, meanwhile, has responded by announcing that:
"We believe the suit is without merit and we will defend ourselves against it vigorously."
