After a European court ruling in February forced Google to remove references to seventeen French- and German-language news web-sites from its Google News service, talks between the parties have resulted in a limited resumption of linking by Google News.
The Belgian Court of First Instance had agreed with Belgian newspaper group Copiepresse that Google's use of the newspapers' headlines and its practice of 'cacheing' the content of stories infringed on Copiepresse's copyright. It is not clear whether Google will appeal the court's ruling.
"Internet users interested in Belgian news and users of Google's search engine may have noticed today that the Web sites of the Belgian French and German-language daily newspapers are again referenced on the search engine," said a joint statement issued by Google and Copiepresse last week.
"This decision was made jointly by Google and Copiepresse as part of the constructive dialogue that has resumed between the two organizations," said the statement. "The Belgian French and German language daily press publishers and Google intend to use a quiet period in the court dispute to continue their efforts to identify tangible ways to collaborate in the long term."
The newspapers' websites will now again be linked from Google News, but the content itself will be protected by a 'noarchive' tag. "The websites of the Belgian French and German-language daily press will now appear without a 'cached' link in the search results of Google's search engine, thanks to their use of the 'noarchive' tag," said the statement.
Last November, Google and the Associated Press reached a licensing agreement regarding use of the latter's copyrighted news content and photographs. Neither party released concrete information regarding financial terms or the exact use to which Google will put AP's news content (although the Wall Street Journal reported that the arrangement is not expected to affect Google News), but a Google spokeswoman told Reuters that: "It's a licensing agreement that lets us use original AP content in new(er) ways than we have used in the past for Google News."
