Malta’s Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, promoted Malta as a gateway to trade with North African and Arab countries in a meeting with Czech businessmen.
The meeting organised by Malta Enterprise, aimed at presenting a strong case for increased Czech investment within the island, particularly in the area of technology.
The Czech Business community showed particular interest in improving trade with Libya, primarily for its oil sector. Malta pointed out that it had participated in trade with Libya for many years and will be renewing its double tax treaty with the country later this week, making Malta an ideal conduit for trade with the Libyan market. Gonzi then moved to emphasize that Malta held a wide range of double tax agreements, meaning trade via Malta would more often than not be exempt from double taxation.
At the meeting he also outlined the government’s targets to turn the island into a 'centre of excellence' in seven sectors by 2015 and increase Malta's network of double tax agreements.
