Hamilton, Bermuda-based Global Crossing Europe, provider of global broadband communications services, has announced the appointment of Rodney Matthews, founder and former chief executive of Scottish Telecom, as its president and chief operating officer.
Matthews is quite a catch for Global Crossing, having established himself as a major figure in UK telecoms through a series of key acquisitions at Scottish Telecom, including the Internet Service Provider Demon Internet.
Since his departure from Scottish Telecom two years ago, he has been advising information technology start-ups on strategy.
In addition to his new role, Matthews will remain as non-executive chairman of Alpha Telecom, a smaller alternative operator. He commented that his decision to join Global Crossing had been the unique nature of the challenge. The company's global network will be the first global fiber optic network and has already announced 101,000 route miles, serving 27 countries and more than 200 major cities. When completed, it will span five continents, addressing 80 percent of the world's international traffic.
Matthews' move to Global Crossing is not without irony. Last year the company bought the UK firm Racal Telecom, based in Reading, a deal which Matthew's had set his sights on whilst at Scottish Telecom but which never materialised.
Global Crossing Europe has taken on a number of new key executives since the beginning of the year as part of its drive to become one of the world's leading network providers.
