The much awaited telecommunications bill is now being heard in current sessions of the House of Assembly.
The Bill could see issues relating to telecommunications being brought to the foreground. If the bill is passed successfully through the House of Assembly the lack of telephone lines and restrictions by Spain on telecommunications could be brought to the foreground as new industries could place the present telecommunications structure in Gibraltar at an immense strain.
It is reported that at least two media and telecommunications companies are looking into the possibility of using Gibraltar as a base if the liberalisation of telecommunications takes goes ahead, allowing competitive use of broadcasting and telecommunications networks. Speculation that several telephone companies have also targetted Gibraltar as a possible base have also been voiced in the industry as the Government seeks to liberalise telecommunications, and bringing Gibraltar in line with the rest of Europe.
Iberia News also reports on Spain's procrastination over the issue
of more phone numbers to Gibraltar:
The EU has been claimed to be dragging its feet following the EU's decision to postpone the promised action against Britain and Spain over issues concerning the lack of land lines and mobile numbers in Gibraltar, due to Spanish restrictions on telecommunication.
Gibraltar is reported to be in a desperate situation in relation to telecommunications, with claims that report that recent trends will leave Gibraltar without telephone numbers before the end of the year.
The EU had earlier in the year stated that it would be looking into the possibility of taking firm action against Britain and Spain to solve the present situation. The action was postponed due to the summer break, but as yet has not been looked into.
