The players, manager and directors of Newcastle United, the UK premiership soccer team, visited Gibraltar recently to enhance the club's links to the Rock. According to Iberia News, Newcastle Utd International Ltd Deputy Chairman, Douglas Hall, endorsed Gibraltar as a centre for commerce, stating that "Gibraltar was good for business."
The Newcastle contingent were in Gibraltar for a number of reasons, one of them being to launch the Newcastle Utd International company, an event attended by some of Gibraltar's key business figures. At a press conference, Mr Hall cited the weather, the language facilities, services and the currency as factors attractive for new businesses looking to set up in Gibraltar. Newcastle are reported not to have asked for any special concessions from the local authorities.
It should not be forgotten that soccer is no longer just about the game, it is about big business too, and in the UK several teams have become listed companies in their own right. According to Iberia News, the arrival of the international arm of Newcastle is viewed as a significant boost to Gibraltar's financial sector and adds to the number of high profile companies setting up their headquarters on the Rock.
